What does Kendal have to offer?
Kendal has a wealth of activities and attractions for visitors to enjoy. With its majestic castle and cobbled streets, Kendal is a popular destination in Cumbria that you are sure to fall in love with. Whatever you’re into, from superb food and drink, discovering quirky gifts or just absorbing the atmosphere of this beautiful market town, there is something for everyone.
Food & drink
The Royal Silverdale Public House, is part of the Holgates Family Group and offers a wide selection of locally-sourced beers and ales as well as offering hearty meals. This lovely pub is warm and inviting after having gone undergone a restoration in 2016. Rain or shine, The Royal Silverdale is the perfect place to socialise, spend time with family and be merry.
Arnside
You’ll find places to eat on the estuary front including The Albion. This inviting restaurant is home to locally sourced beers, ales and food with amazing views of the waterfront – perfect for refuelling before the hike back up to Far Arnside.
Shopping
Kendal
The town of Kendal, also known as Gateway to the Lakes, is just 15 miles from Silverdale. This fantastic market town has everything you could possibly need. You’ll find everything from a theatre and cinema to traditional market days twice a week, museums, art galleries and a beautiful 12th Century parish church.
Arnside
Arnside is a quaint and friendly seaside village, you’ll find a lovely place to explore and experience local shops offering fresh produce and unique souvenirs.
Make sure to catch the tide while it’s sweeping up on the bay. You could even enjoy a fish and chip supper on the beach while doing so. With everything from cosy tea rooms to vibrant restaurants and pubs – Arnside has something for everyone and will definitely not disappoint.
Historical
Wray Castle, located near Ambleside at Low Wray, is a magical neo-gothic castle. This fantastical castle is really popular with kids allowing them to explore the rooms, turrets, and gardens. The turrets also offer stunning views of Lake Windermere.
Even when the weather isn’t playing ball Wray Castle is well worth a visit. Kids can have fun with historical fancy dress outfits or explore the Peter Rabbit adventure rooms, packed with activities for the little ones.
Magnificant views
Jenny Brown’s Point
Jenny Brown’s Point is a high point offering fantastic views of the bay. It is very popular with photographers and serves as a great place to start a coastline walk.
Arnside Knott
Arnside Knott, located just down the lane from Far Arnside, gives you a great viewpoint for taking in the views of Silverdale and Arnside.
Family adventures
The World of Beatrix Potter, Windermere
One of the largest attractions in the Lake District, The World of Beatrix Potter is a fantastic family day out. Recreating some of Beatrix Potter’s magical stories within the beautiful Lake District countryside, The World of Beatrix Potter includes a character-themed café and gift shop.
Hill Top, Near Sawrey
This house was the home of the famed children’s author Beatrix Potter and is now owned by the National Trust, who she left the house to in her will. The 17th-century farmhouse is fully open to the public and recreated to be as close as possible to how it was back when Beatrix Potter was living there, with lots of items and artefacts that were owned by her.
Best beaches
Far Arnside
Far Arnside is great for beachgoers. This splendid coastal park is perfect for strolls and perhaps even a beach picnic when the tide is out. Far Arnside also gives you direct access to Morecambe Bay.
Arnside Knott
Arnside Knott is a stunning walking route and viewpoint where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Silverdale, Arnside, Morecambe Bay and beyond! The footpath runs directly through Holins Farm.
The Cove
The Cove is a small stone beach just a 5-minute walk from the main entrance of Silverdale Park. This beach is perfect for quiet strolls and access to the wider coastline.
Walking
Bird spotters and nature lovers will also love the nearby RSPB Leighton Moss. Just a 15-minute drive away, visitors regularly see high-flying birds and rare creatures. Keep an eye out for bearded tits, breeding bitterns, deer, and butterflies.
The small stone beach of Silverdale Cove is perfect for a quick stroll and access point to walk along the coastline.
Adrenaline activities
If you’re more into your outdoor pursuits, Warton Crag is the place to be. Overlooking Carnforth and directly over Marsh House Holiday Park, Warton Crag offers a great mix of hiking, climbing and abseiling, with amazing views of the surrounding countryside. Nearby you’ll also find the village of Warton, the ancestral home of George Washington.
Throwbarrow Quarry is hugely popular with climbers offering exciting and challenging climbing routes.
Dog friendly
There’s a variety of dog walking routes accessible from our cottages, where your dog can stretch their legs. Just a short drive from the park you can also explore Gait Barrows National Nature Reserve and RSPB Leighton Moss.
Places of interest
Carnforth
The town of Carnforth is a traditional market town offers a number of independent shops and stalls as well as their award-winning train station which regularly hosts exhibitions and events. For some outstanding landscape views of the town and countryside, be sure to check out the overlooking Warton Crag.
Hidden away in Kendal is this lively venue packed with art exhibitions, musical events, theatre performances, and more. There are also frequent crafts workshops for children to take part in too.
The Arts Centre is also home to the Vats Bar and Grainstore Restaurant if you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy a lunch or dinner with friends and family.
This impressive aquarium located south of Lake Windermere is an educational and entertaining site, perfect for days out with the kids. Lakes Aquarium is home to more than 30 different marine habitats, featuring all kinds of species, both from the local area and around the world. The otters are a firm fan favourite, especially at feeding times. These playful creatures are adorable and well worth a visit alone. The underwater tunnel is another highlight allowing you to experience walking on the bottom of Lake Windermere.
