Arnside and Silverdale offer plentiful attractions

What can you expect to find in Arnside and Silverdale? After all, you may not be familiar with these two areas and what it has to offer. For nature lovers who enjoy great scenery there are some tempting options for activities that can fill your time with us with wonderful memories. Arnside Beach has been described as one of the area’s ‘hidden gems’. This two-mile long beach sits just north of Morecambe Bay, and offers sweeping views of the Irish Sea, as well as a quiet place to enjoy the charms of this rugged part of England’s coast. It is also the starting point for the Cumbria Coastal Way.

Hikers staying in one of Holgates’ self-catering Arnside and Silverdale cottages will be itching to explore the Cumbria Coastal Way, which runs from here right up the Scottish Borders. There is 9.5 miles stretch of the Way that visitors can follow from Silverdale to Milnthorpe Bridge. It is a gentle route that does not require excessive levels of fitness to follow, and there are some superb views to punctuate your walk. For refreshment along the way, you can pause for a pint at Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, a traditional pub that is one of the region’s oldest. Literature fans can also stop to enjoy Lindeth Tower. This was where Elizabeth Gaskell wrote her iconic novel ‘Ruth’.

Twitchers and other nature lovers might prefer to take a trip to Leighton Moss, however. Located on the edge of Morecombe Bay, this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is also a Designated Site of Scientific Interest. Managed by the RSPB, it is possible to see rare birds such as Avocets and Bitterns as well as many other birds from the hides, viewing platform or 9m sky tower that the reserve possesses.

Tread in the hoofprints of the Border Reivers at Arnside Tower

Any history buffs staying in the area will also be keen to take in Arnside Knott and Arnside Tower. The Knott is an accessible local beauty spot that boasts great views of the area’s maritime charms. The tower is a 15th century Peel tower that was built to keep an eye out for reiving Scots crossing the border with ill intent. Although you cannot access the inside of the tower, it is an atmospheric spot at which one can sense history’s persistent shadow. It makes a great spot for a cuppa and a sandwich too.

All that walking and history will probably create something of an appetite and thirst, so it is good that Arnside has a selection of local hostelries in addition to Ye Olde Fighting Cocks. The Albion is a 200-year-old pub with a great selection of ales as well as food. Anyone wanting to fuel up for a long walk should make sure they visit the Wayside Café too. This is located conveniently close to the railway station and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you like a pie, then head to the Old Bakehouse, where a temptingly tasty array of pasty-based delights are available. Arnside Chip Shop makes the perfect stop-off after a walk along the Arnside seafront too.
