It has become more popular than ever to holiday in the UK, and there are plenty of beautiful places that you can enjoy all year round. Read on to learn more about our newest property, Hillberry Cottage, based in one of the most stunning and interesting parts of the UK.
Hillberry Cottage
Hillberry Cottage is one of the latest cottages to be added to the Holgates Family Cottage Collection, and it’s been newly decorated and refurbished to the highest standards.
It’s a detached holiday cottage, which means that it has the privacy and tranquillity that you’re looking for during your holiday. From its large private garden, it has wonderful views of Farleton Knott and the surrounding countryside. It has free Wi-Fi, and can accommodate up to 4 people with 2 bedrooms, and the cosy lounge has a log burner – perfect to relax in if you have been out for a walk in the winter weather.
Nearby is the Silverdale Holiday Park and included in the cottage rental is complimentary access to its 5-star leisure facilities, which includes a sauna, swimming pool and bowling alley. The cottage is within walking distance of a charming local pub The New Inn.
Farleton Knott – a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)
Near the cottage is Farleton Knott, which is an eye-catching feature of the landscape that can be seen for miles around. Once at the top, it offers beautiful views of the surrounding Lancashire countryside. What could be better than exploring this stunning part of the country, then going back to your privately rented cottage with all the comforts of home?
There are a lot of walks available on and around Farleton Knott, and most of them are easy to moderate to follow, despite their imposing presence. With its white cliffs and limestone top, it looks more difficult than it is.
Breath-taking views
It’s certainly worth the effort, as the views are simply breath-taking. It has been designated a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) because it has some of the best limestone pavements in Britain, and from the top by the imposing cairn, you can see across to the Lune Valley with the Middleton Fells, Calf Top and Crag Hill. To the west you can see the hill tops of the Lake District on Morecambe Bay, and the Bowland Ridges across the horizon to the south. If you are walking during the colder months, you are likely to see magnificent views of snow-capped mountains along your walk.
Brimming with wildlife
The area is popular with nature lovers as well as walkers, due to the rare plant life that can be found here, among them, the rare rigid buckler fern and limestone fern, dark red helleborine and Solomon’s seal, fly orchids and lily of the valley. You may be lucky to see a roe deer, badger or fox, though you are more likely to see butterflies such as the brown fritillary, yellow brimstone and the tortoiseshell. If you’re a keen birdwatcher, you may spot tawny owls, long-tailed tits, fieldfare, woodpecker, redwing and the mistle thrush. The Knott is classed as ‘open country’ meaning you can wander wherever you wish, though the land is still farmed, so do close any gates you walk through and walks across the craggy top may not be suitable for dogs. You may see a rare breed of White Park cattle in the fields.
Craggy landscape
The windswept scenery has unusual rock formations and huge boulders littering the landscape, including a curiously named feature called ‘Uberash Breast’, which is a small cliff of exposed limestone. Features such as this were created during the last Ice Age, and occur in many valleys in the Yorkshire Dales, as the glaciers scraped away the topsoil.
Farleton Knott is also popular with climbers, and it boasts several well-known climbing routes of varying degrees of difficulty, along with Hutton Roof, Dalton Crag and Newbiggin Crag which can be found nearby.
