When you think of holidays in the English countryside what is the first thing that comes to mind? Is it a quaint village with a town green and quaint cottages? Perhaps a shoreline with smoke rising from the chimneys of a secluded stone building? Whatever you think of it probably involves the iconic British cottage. But what makes a true cottage? How do we define these inviting, homely buildings that have become an integral part of holidaying in this wonderful country? Let’s investigate.
From Early Beginnings
A cottage was originally a word to describe a small home with low ceilings. Usually found in the villages dotted around the country, these homes differed according to the area they were in. Most would make use of local stone and timber creating a unique look that often came to define parts of the country. The name cottage comes from being the ‘simple home of a medieval cotter, or agricultural labourer’.
Since the medieval period, cottages have changed from workers’ homes into holiday bolt holes where people can escape the everyday and discover the majesty of the English countryside. This shift from a traditional necessity to modern holiday making is what gives cottages their unique identity. They marry together tradition and remote locations with comfort and village charm to create the perfect place for you, the family, and even your pet to stay.
To Contemporary Holiday Destinations
By modern standards, holiday cottages have taken on a romantic quality. Cottages promise peace and quiet, a comfy bed, maybe even a log burner to curl up by if you stay in the winter months. Basically, anything you need for a relaxing family holiday. This thinking is a large part of how we compiled our very own Cottage Collection with each decorated to create a tranquil space that feels warm and inviting during your stay.
Cove Lodge, Sleeps 4, Pet Friendly
Cove Lodge is a stunning, bright and inviting cottage with a log burner, wrap-around patio, garden and plenty of room for the family. Celebrating our fantastic natural surroundings, this cottage like most in our collection features drawings of nature and wildlife into the decor. It has a main double bedroom alongside a twin bedroom. This spacious cottage also has a family bathroom and an inviting living area with a separate kitchen dining space. Add to this a 5-minute walk to the beach, The Royal Silverdale just a 15-minute stroll away and complimentary use of the nearby Holgates holiday park and you’ve found the perfect cottage getaway.
The Barn, Sleeps 6, Pet Friendly
The Barn, located on the outskirts of Silverdale, has plenty of seaside charm. Just 5 minutes from the coast, this airy, bright cottage reflects the beach atmosphere with light walls and rich wooden floors and ceiling beams that are just as inviting as the incredible vistas.

Pier & Tower Cottages, Sleep 6, Pet Friendly
The Pier and Tower Cottages, located in Arnside, are situated at the heart of this charming village just a short walk from the coast. Both cottages can sleep up to 6 guests and are pet friendly, although you’ll need a pooch that likes exercise as there is no outdoor space linked with the cottages – although we think the many walking routes and coastline make up for this! Ideal as a base for adventures and hikes to Arnside Tower, Jenny Brown’s Point, or Windermere in the Lake District (30 minutes away by car), you’ll also find some great amenities on your doorstep including tea rooms, local shops, and of course the quintessential fish and chip shop. If you’re looking for sea views, you need only walk 2 minutes from your front door to take in the dramatic coastline.
The cottages themselves are also packed with everything you need to entertain a large group including an open plan kitchen and dining area, 3 bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room with Smart TV, WiFi, and a fully equipped kitchen for making delicious family meals. All of these comforts along with the amazing natural activities and surroundings celebrate everything the modern cottage has come to represent.
